What Should I Photograph Before a Roof Insurance Adjuster Visits?
A practical checklist for documenting roof storm damage before an insurance adjuster visits — what to shoot, from what angles, and why timing matters.
Photograph the damage itself from multiple angles and distances, undamaged areas for contrast, the date and any visible storm debris, and do this before any repair work starts. Time-stamped photos taken the same day as the damage are the strongest documentation you can provide.

Good documentation is the single biggest factor in how smoothly a roof insurance claim goes. Here’s exactly what to capture, and in what order.
Before you do anything else
If it’s safe, contain any active interior leak — but don’t get on the roof yourself to do it. Roof access after storm damage is genuinely dangerous, and it’s exactly the kind of assessment we do as part of a free storm-damage inspection.
What to photograph
- Wide establishing shots of the whole affected roof slope or area, showing where the damage sits relative to the rest of the roof
- Close-up shots of the specific damage — torn or missing shingles, displaced flashing, visible deck damage — from multiple angles
- Undamaged sections of the same roof, for contrast — this helps establish that the damage is localized and event-driven, not uniform wear across the whole roof
- Any visible storm debris — broken branches, displaced gutters, anything that supports the “sudden event” narrative
- The date and general weather conditions, either in your phone’s notes or verbally recorded, tying the damage to a specific storm
Timing matters
Photos taken the same day as the damage, or as close to it as possible, are the strongest evidence that the damage is storm-related rather than pre-existing wear. The longer the gap between the event and documentation, the harder it becomes to establish the timeline an adjuster needs.
Why this distinction is worth getting right
Washington homeowners insurance typically covers sudden wind/storm damage but not gradual wear-related deterioration — see our dedicated insurance guide. Photos that clearly show a sudden, localized event (rather than roof-wide aging) support the correct classification of your claim.
What we provide
Every storm-damage call includes time-stamped, adjuster-ready photo documentation as a standard part of the free inspection — independent of whether you end up filing a claim or hiring us for the repair. If damage looks storm-related, we say so; if it looks like pre-existing wear, we say that honestly too.
The bottom line
Document promptly, from multiple angles, including undamaged areas for contrast, and get a professional assessment before assuming either way what the cause was. Call for a free storm-damage inspection.
The bottom line
If you want this priced for your own roof rather than in ranges, we come out and inspect at no charge across Everett and Snohomish County. You get a written per-square price with tear-off and any deck repair broken out separately. Call (425) 382-7590.
